Wonton Soup: A Chinese Culinary Classic

Ingredients:

For the Wontons:

200g ground pork

100g peeled and deveined shrimp finely chopped

2 green onions finely chopped

2 tsp soy sauce

1 tsp sesame oil

1/2 tsp ground white pepper

1/2 tsp grated fresh ginger

1 garlic clove minced

Wonton wrappers (available at most grocery stores in the Asian section)

For the Soup:

1 liter chicken broth

2 green onions sliced

1 tsp sesame oil

1 tsp soy sauce

A pinch of salt and white pepper to taste

Optional: Bok choy or Chinese broccoli

Instructions:

Prepare the Wonton Filling:

In a mixing bowl combine the ground pork chopped shrimp green onions soy sauce sesame oil white pepper ginger and garlic. Mix until well combined.

Wrap the Wontons:

Lay a wonton wrapper flat on your hand or a clean surface. Place a teaspoon of the filling in the center.

Dab the edges of the wrapper with water using your fingertip.

Fold the wrapper over the filling to form a triangle. Press the edges to seal.

Bring the two opposite corners together and press to seal forming the wonton shape.

Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.

Prepare the Soup:

In a large pot bring the chicken broth to a boil.

Add the sesame oil soy sauce salt and white pepper. Adjust seasoning to taste.

Reduce the heat to a simmer.

Cook the Wontons:

Gently drop the wontons into the simmering broth.

Let them cook for about 5 minutes or until they float to the surface.

If using bok choy or Chinese broccoli add them now and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.

Serve:

Ladle the soup and wontons into bowls.

Garnish with sliced green onions.

Serve hot and enjoy!
